For Agnes Tea, Commercial Finance Manager at FrieslandCampina Hong Kong, learning is about more than building expertise, it is about discovering new ways to think, work and make a difference. Alongside her part-time MBA, Agnes explores new languages and makes the most of learning opportunities at work. One experience in the Global LEAP programme challenged her assumptions about helping others and changed how she supports colleagues. Her story shows how personal curiosity and the right development opportunities can help people expand their impact, whatever their role.
From Helping to Empowering
One of Agnes’s biggest takeaways from the Global LEAP programme was the concept of “Multipliers and Diminishers”: how a leader’s behaviour can either bring out the best in others or unintentionally limit their growth. Agnes recognised her own tendency to step in quickly whenever her intern faced a challenge. Although her intention was to help, she realised that solving problems for others could also take away opportunities for them to think independently and learn through experience. Today, she gives clearer context and guidance, allows time for her intern to work through challenges, and steps in when needed to keep tasks on track. The experience reminded her that creating impact is not always about doing more yourself, sometimes, it is about helping others grow in confidence and capability.
Different Ways to Keep Growing
What Agnes values about FrieslandCampina Hong Kong is the variety of ways to learn. Self-paced online modules allow her to learn around her work schedule, while structured programmes such as Global LEAP create dedicated space for reflection, feedback and collaboration. During the programme, she connected with colleagues from different markets and functions, worked through business simulations and explored different approaches to solving business challenges. She also appreciates a culture where managers encourage personal learning and employees can share new knowledge with their teams. For Agnes, development is not limited to formal training or a particular job title, it is an ongoing exchange of ideas, experiences and perspectives.
After more than four years at FrieslandCampina, Agnes sees learning as a shared effort: the company creates opportunities, while individuals bring the curiosity and initiative to make the most of them. Her experience shows that professional growth does not have to stop at technical expertise. With support to explore new skills, learn from colleagues and put new ideas into practice, employees can continue expanding their contribution and discover new possibilities in their careers.
