Internship enzyme optimisation for prebiotics

Within the prebiotics-sidestream team within FrieslandCampina Ingredients, we are committed to maximizing the value of lactose into high-value prebiotics through enzymatic processes. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the optimization of this conversion process and developments in the prebiotics portfolio. Our prebiotic GOS has been the most frequently-used GOS in infant milk formula for over 20 years

As an intern, you will focus on modeling the optimal conditions for galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) production and/or development of new types of GOS/prebiotics.
Your work will involve conducting a comprehensive literature review, performing laboratory experiments to optimize enzymatic reaction conditions, analyzing experimental data, and potentially developing a predictive model to optimize the GOS production process.

  • Conducting a literature review on the enzymatic conversion of lactose to GOS.
  • Co-developing, planning, setting up, and executing laboratory experiments.
  • Collecting and analyzing data, interpreting results, and translating findings into insights.
  • Modeling the enzymatic process to predict optimal conditions for GOS production.
  • Documenting the research in an organized and structured way, and compiling a final report.
Staying true to who you really are, that is your starting point at FrieslandCampina. Because it is precisely by embracing our differences that we can grow together. We want to create a working environment that allows all employees to bring their best and authentic selves. If who we are suits you, but you're not sure if you're the best fit for the role, we still encourage you to apply so we can help you find the role that fits you best.

This internship will take place within the R&D department of FrieslandCampina Ingredients. You will be part of the GOS sidestream team, which is dedicated to the valorization of lactose into galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and the broader valorization of sidestreams within FrieslandCampina Ingredients. Our team brings together expertise in food technology and biotechnology, working collaboratively to maximize milk valorisation.

The internship will take place at the FrieslandCampina Innovation Center in Wageningen, the Netherlands, where the team is located and where we have office, laboratory and pilot plant facilities.
